How a Wheel of Names Picks a Random Name

How an online random name picker turns a list into a fair pick, whether a wheel can be rigged, and whether it is safe to use with a class list.

What is a random name picker?

A random name picker (also called a wheel of names, name spinner or random selector) is a tool that picks one or more entries from a list at random. Drawing names from a hat works too, but online random name pickers are easier to show to a room, harder to argue with, and quicker to reuse.

On this site, the classroom wheel spinner and the wheel of names both pick with the browser's secure random number source. The steps below show what happens between pressing spin and seeing a name.

    How random name pickers work

    1. You add names. Each one gets a slice of exactly the same size.
    2. You press spin. The page asks the browser for a random number.
    3. That number sets how far the wheel turns and where it stops.
    4. The wheel slows down and stops there. The name under the pointer is the pick.

Where the random number comes from

Not all random number sources are equal. Browsers have two. Math.random is quick and fine for games. crypto.getRandomValues is built so its output cannot be predicted, which is what a fair picker needs. Here is how they differ:

    Basic random (weak)

    • Uses simple Math.random()
    • Results can be predictable
    • Same seed = same results
    • Not suitable for important selections

    Cryptographic random (strong)

    • Uses crypto.getRandomValues
    • Results cannot be predicted
    • Each selection is independent
    • Built for security work, so more than enough for a draw

    The spinning animation

Many people don't realize this: the spinning wheel is just for show. The winner is picked by the random algorithm before or as the wheel starts to turn. The animation reveals that result.

So you cannot "time" your click to change the outcome. The pick is random whenever you click and however the wheel looks while it turns.

Common use cases for random name pickers

    Education

    • Calling on students for questions
    • Forming groups for projects
    • Determining presentation order
    • Selecting students for prizes or privileges

    • Raffle and giveaway winner selection
    • Team formation for activities
    • Meeting facilitator selection
    • Task or project assignment

    • Gift exchange assignments

Features to look for in a random name picker

When you choose an online random name picker, check for these:

    • True randomness: uses cryptographic algorithms, not basic Math.random().
    • No registration: works straight away without an account.
    • Privacy: your list stays in your browser unless you choose to share it.
    • Multiple winners: can pick more than one winner when you need it.
• Sharing options: lets you share or record results so others can check them.
    • Mobile friendly: works on phones and tablets without an app.

Is wheel of names truly random?

If it uses the secure source, yes: every name has the same chance and nobody can predict the next one, though the same name can come up twice in a row by chance. For the full answer, see is Wheel of Names truly random?

Is wheel of names safe to use?

A web-based wheel runs in your browser, so there is nothing to download or install. The real question is what happens to your list:

    • On this site the names stay in your browser. They are not saved between visits.
    • Share links carry the names inside the link, so anyone with the link can see them.
    • Auto-fill sends only the short topic you type, not your list, to our server.
    • Other sites may save wheels to an account. Check their privacy page if the list is a class register.

For students, first names are usually enough. Our privacy policy has the full detail.

Filling the wheel from a topic

Typing every item is the slow part. Our wheel can suggest items from a short description: type "team building activities" or "birthday party prizes" and it fills the wheel, which you can then edit. It does not touch the pick itself.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does a wheel of names act as a random name picker online?

You type or paste a list. Each name gets an equal slice of the wheel. When you press spin, the page asks the browser for a random number, turns that into a stopping angle, and animates the wheel to it. The name under the pointer is the pick.

Is wheel of names truly random?

On a wheel that uses the browser's secure random source, crypto.getRandomValues, yes in every way that matters: each name has the same chance and nobody can predict the result. Spin-Wheel.org and wheelofnames.com both say they use it. Repeats still happen, because that is what random looks like.

Is wheel of names safe to use?

Generally, yes. A wheel runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to install. The thing to check is where your list goes: on Spin-Wheel.org the names stay in your browser unless you share a link, which carries the names inside it. Avoid putting anything private on a wheel you share.

Can someone rig or cheat a spin wheel?

Not by clicking at the right moment. The result comes from a random number chosen when you press spin, and the animation just plays out to it. The person running the wheel can change the list, though, for example by adding a name twice, so show the list before you spin.

What's the difference between a random name picker and wheel of names?

They are essentially the same thing. 'Random name picker' describes what it does, while 'wheel of names' describes how it looks. Both pick at random from a list of names. Some tools add extras like AI name suggestions or multiple winners.
