Spin Wheel Tools Compared: Wheel of Names Alternatives
Four free spin the wheel tools side by side: Wheel of Names, Picker Wheel, Wheel Decide and Spin-Wheel.org. If you are looking for a Wheel of Names alternative, this shows how they differ. Every fact about the other three comes from their own websites, checked in October 2026.
Before you read
We make Spin-Wheel.org, so this is not an independent review and there is no winner here. Where a site did not say something about a feature, the table says "Not stated" rather than guessing. Features change, so check the site itself before you rely on one.

What each one is like
Wheel of Names (wheelofnames.com)
The wheel of names at wheelofnames.com. Its FAQ says the premium features are free, and that the site shows ads to pay for itself. You can spin and share without an account, and log in if you want wheels saved to the cloud. You can also save a wheel as a file on your own device.
- Remove the winner after each spin with one button.
- Custom background image, center logo and color theme, with an image gallery built in.
- Shows up to 1,000 names on the wheel at once.
- Picks with crypto.getRandomValues, and can be embedded on a website.
Picker Wheel (pickerwheel.com)
A random picker wheel with many extra tools, such as number, letter and country wheels. The free version shows ads. Paid plans remove the ads and add more saved files and branding options.
- A "hide choice" mode takes each picked entry off the wheel, so you can call students one by one.
- "Get Ideas by AI" suggests entries from a short description such as "10 farm animals".
- Entries can be weighted to change their chances.
- A free account saves up to 15 wheels.
Wheel Decide (wheeldecide.com)
A decision wheel with a section of ready-made wheels you can browse. It is free, and you log in to save wheels.
- Up to 100 choices per wheel.
- An option to remove a choice after it is landed on.
- Preset color themes, and wheels can be embedded on your own site.
Spin-Wheel.org (this site)
Our classroom wheel spinner and random name picker. There are no accounts and nothing is saved between visits. A share link carries the names, slice colors and background, so keeping the link keeps the wheel.
- Pick up to 3 winners in one go, ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
- Auto-fill: type a topic and it suggests names and makes a background. It is limited to a few requests a minute.
- Record the spin as a video, or download the result as an image.
- Picks with crypto.getRandomValues. How the pick works.
- No ads, no signup, and no cloud account.
Which one fits which job
- Calling on students: any tool that removes the winner works. Wheel of Names and this site do it with one button; Picker Wheel has its hide choice mode. Our guide for teachers has more.
- A wheel you reuse every week: an account helps, so Wheel of Names, Picker Wheel or Wheel Decide. Here, you would bookmark the share link.
- A giveaway with several prizes: remove each winner and spin again on any of them, or pick up to 3 ranked winners at once here. See prize wheel ideas.
- Unequal chances on purpose: Picker Wheel lets you weight entries. Elsewhere, add an entry twice to double its chance.
How to choose a random name picker
Most random name pickers look alike. These checks tell them apart, whichever tool you end up with.
- Does it say how it picks? Look for crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's secure random source. A tool that names its method is easier to trust than one that just says "random".
- Can you remove the winner? For turns, running orders and prize draws, each winner needs to come off before the next spin.
- Do you need an account? Useful for a wheel you reuse every week, a nuisance for a one-off.
- Where does your list go? A class list is personal data. Check whether names stay on your device or are saved on a server.
- What will people see? If you spin on a projector or a stream, look at the page as your audience will, ads included.
- Can people see it was fair? Spinning on a shared screen, or recording the spin, does more for trust than any claim on the page.
- Does it work on your device? Try it on the school laptop, tablet or board before the lesson, not during it.
You may not need a wheel at all. A list randomizer, such as the one on Random.org, is quicker when you want a whole list shuffled into order. A wheel is better when people are watching, because everyone sees the result land.
On your phone: browser wheel or app?
A browser wheel needs nothing installed on iPhone or Android. On Spin-Wheel.org you open the site, paste or type your list, and tap the wheel to spin. A downloaded app is worth it mainly when you need a wheel with no signal. If you pick one, check when it was last updated.
To make a browser wheel open like an app, add it to your home screen:
- iPhone (Safari): tap the Share button, then "Add to Home Screen".
- Android (Chrome): tap the three-dot menu, then "Add to Home screen".
On Spin-Wheel.org, a home screen icon opens a fresh wheel, since nothing is saved between visits. To reopen a particular list, bookmark its share link instead. Auto-fill needs a connection, because the topic is sent to our server. Keep entries short so they stay readable on a small wheel, and use the speaker button if the room needs quiet.
Questions
Which spin wheel tool should I use?
It depends on the job. For a quick pick with no account, any of the four works. If you want wheels saved to an account, Wheel of Names, Picker Wheel and Wheel Decide all offer that. If you want the wheel filled from a short topic, Spin-Wheel.org and Picker Wheel both have an AI option. We make Spin-Wheel.org, so weigh our view of it accordingly.
Is Wheel of Names free?
Yes. Its FAQ says its premium features are free with no paywall, and that it shows ads to keep the site running. You only need to log in to save wheels to the cloud. Checked October 2026.
Do these wheels pick fairly?
Wheel of Names says it uses crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's secure random number source. Spin-Wheel.org uses the same source. Picker Wheel and Wheel Decide did not say which method they use on the pages we checked. Picker Wheel also lets you weight entries, which is useful but means a wheel is only even if the weights are.
Can I use a random picker wheel without signing up?
Yes, on all four. Spin-Wheel.org has no accounts at all: to keep a wheel, you keep its share link. The other three let you spin without an account and ask you to log in only when you want to save.
